SULTAN AZLAN SHAH GALLERY
The Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Paduka Seri Sultan Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, on 9th December 2003. This beautiful gallery was restored from the old palace, known as Istana Ulu, which was originally built in 1898 and completed in 1903. The palace was previously used as the final resting place for three Sultans of Perak, namely the late Sultan Idris Murshidul ‘Adzam Shah I, the late Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamatullah Shah, and the late Sultan Yussuf Izzudin Shah.
Today, the gallery serves as a place that chronicles the history and significant events in the life of His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, from his childhood to his renowned status as the 34th Sultan, Yang Dipertuan, and Raja Pemerintah (Governor) of the state of Perak, as well as the 9th Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong (Supreme King) of Malaysia.
The gallery serves as an excellent approach for the people to gain a deeper understanding of a sovereign ruler and to foster appreciation and understanding of the Constitutional Monarchy Institution.
The magnificence and grandeur of the gallery showcase a blend of colonial and local architecture. The roof design is in the form of a pyramid with influences from Aceh, while the domes on the two towers of the building bear influences from India.
Many of the building materials were imported, such as the roof from France and the tiles from Italy. However, local materials were also extensively used, including the roof framework made of cengal wood and carvings from the finest meranti wood.
The gallery exhibits personal information and belongings of His Royal Highness Sultan Azlan Shah, displayed in an organized and systematic manner in each exhibition space. The materials displayed are divided into several themes, including:
1. Royal Genealogy
